Open Call – Artist Residencies 2024
deadline: February 5, 2024
The Open Call for Artist Residencies 2024 is closed. Many thanks to all the artists who submitted their applications. We will inform all applicants about the decisions by February 18, 2024.
We are happy to announce our second open call for artist residencies at Muijala.
Taidetila Muijala is an emerging art space and artist residency located at the village of Reila in South-West Finland. Surrounded by forests and the sea, we can offer artists an inspiring experience in nature, cozy accommodation and extensive workspaces.
The residency is open to artists and cultural professionals of all disciplines. We strive for artistic freedom and have no thematic boundaries. Each residency is based on the artists’ needs and is guided by their process. We can offer a quiet place for research, time for experiments and room for spacious projects.
Duration
We are now accepting residency applications for 2024. The available months are: March, April, May, August, September & October. As the seasons are very different, it’s good to take into account which time of the year would be the best suitable for your work. See a description of the Finnish seasons here.
The average duration of a residency is between 1 and 3 months. However we also accept project proposals that require longer or shorter stays.
Spaces
We offer residents a private bedroom in the main wooden house + the use of the common spaces: the kitchen, the dining room, the bathroom and 2 toilets. Residents are also welcome to make use of the sea sauna, the basement sauna (in the cellar of the rowhouse) and the yard.
The main work spaces are located in the rowhouse studio’s, right beside the main wooden house. The 320 m2 working spaces are divided into rooms that vary from 30 m2 to 7,5 m2, with big windows that face the forest. During the warm season (May- September) residents can also use the working spaces in our the two wooden barns or the large industrial hall. See here a description of the different spaces.

Residency fee
As an independent non-profit organisation we ask artists to pay a residency fee in order to keep the place running. The fee varies according to a sliding scale price from €450 – 750 per person per month. Depending on your financial situation and your ability to pay, you can choose to pay the minimum fee which covers a part of the hosting costs, or to invest a bit more in the organisation. If you currently have a stable source of income like a working grant, please consider paying the full price, so that we can continue hosting those who can’t. We believe that this system offers more equal chances and it enables artists in different career stages to do a residency at Muijala. All fees will be directly invested into the residency and art space.
Art Space
Organising art events and exhibitions is an important activity of our residency. We would like to offer an inspiring and productive environment for creation as well as opportunities for presentation of artistic work. Let us know in your application if you are interested in participating (in) or initiating a cultural event at our art space.
How to apply
To apply please send us a free-form motivation or work plan (about half a page / one page), portfolio (or link to website) & cv to artspacemuijala@gmail.com
