Residencies

We are welcoming artists the whole year round. As the seasons are very different, it’s good to take into account which time of the year would be the most suitable for your work. The average duration of a residency is 1-3 months. However we are also accepting residency proposals that require longer or shorter stays. We are open to artists of all disciplines. Read more about our mission and operating principles here. We have the capacity to host 3-5 artist at the same time, and aim to host 20-30 artists each year.

We offer residents a private bedroom in the main wooden house + the use of the common spaces: the kitchen, dining room, bathroom and 2 toilets. Residents are also welcome to make use of the sea sauna and the yard.

Beside the living spaces residents can work in our several working spaces according to the needs of their project. The main studio spaces are located in the rowhouse and the industrial hall. In the warmer season (May – September) the unheated spaces in the hall and the barns can be used as well. See a description of the different spaces here.

As an independent non-profit organisation we ask residents to pay a residency fee in order to keep the place running. The fee varies according to a sliding scale price from €450 – 750 per month. Depending on your financial situation and your ability to pay, you can choose to pay the minimum fee which covers a part of the hosting costs, or to invest a bit more in the organisation. All fees will be directly invested into the residency and art space. We believe that this system offers more equal chances and enables artists in different career stages to do a residency at Muijala.

Organising art events and exhibitions is an important activity of our residency. We would like to provide an inspiring and productive environment for creation as well as opportunities to present artistic work. Please let us know in your application if you are interested in participating (in) or initiating a cultural event at our art space.
Due to a lack of resources we currently have a limited capacity to organise & produce events. Therefore we can’t promise the implementation of each event proposal but ideas are always welcome. We’d love to discuss what is possible!

Note: from March 2025 onward there will be a dog living on the premises. Her name is Zara Lou, she is a 3-years old, middle-sized, husky-mix rescue dog with an open and friendly character. She is living with our founder & main host Roos in the same accommodation building as the residents.

We aim to create a varied residency program with optimal circumstances for the artists. We will inform all applicants within 6 weeks about our decisions.

When your residency application is accepted, we will send you a residency contract and a deposit payment request.
