Seasons

The summer (June – August) is the brightest season with many hours of light a day. Around Juhannus (Midsummer night) it almost doesn’t get dark at all. The temperatures vary from +15 to +30 ˚C. These favourable weather conditions allow the use of our whole premises and the organising of (outdoor) activities and events.

The autumn (September – October) is a beautiful season full of golden trees. It is the time to collect mushrooms and berries in the forest. The temperature usually varies from 0 to +15 ˚C. There can be some autumn rains and storms so weatherproof clothes and shoes are recommended.

The winter season is quite long and lasts from November until March. When the winter is mild the temperature varies between -5 and +5 ˚C. A colder period in winter is between -15 and 0 ˚C. The coldest it gets around here is -20 ˚C, but this happens seldom. The darkest period is during November – January, after that it gets lighter. The thick pack of snow which usally covers the land brightens the days. If you are planning for a stay in the winter, bring plenty layers of warm and weatherproof clothes.

The spring (April – May) is rather short but full of awakening nature and wild flowers. The temperatures vary around 0 to +20 ˚C and the days are getting longer.

Other facilities

There are three beamers that can be used freely. They are quite old and in different conditions, but they are usable for art projects and screenings.

We have many other tools that can be useful to artists. These include mainly equipment for construction, renovating and woodworking. For more info and questions about the tools available, send an email to artspacemuijala@gmail.com.

We have several working tables, chairs and other spare furniture that can be put into use at the studio spaces.

We also have a range of collected recycled materials and (historical) objects that were left by the previous owners of the estate. The material mainly includes second-hand wood, pieces of metal, some fabrics and other old objects/utilities. If you’re interested in using those for your art project, ask the residency staff or send us an email.

Other information for residents

Everyone is responsible for their own cooking. We usually also make some common meals or organise a dinner party, if it suits the current residency group.

The closest grocery stores are ABC Kortela (in Rauma) and Sale (in Pyhäranta). They can be reached by car (20 min drive) or by the local bus. We can also arrange some shopping trips.

The local bus to Rauma stops near our place at the Reila village school (5 min. walk), but it only goes a couple times a day. The first bus leaves at 07:05 from Reila, and the last one back leaves 16:20 from Rauma bus station. During the summer holidays there are fewer busses. Up-to-date local bus schedules can be found here https://seutuplus.fi/en/timetables/ Car rides on other times can be arranged with with our residency staff.

The nearest towns are Rauma, Uusikaupunki, Pori and Turku. Rauma and Uusikaupunki can be reached by the local bus. Busses to Pori and Turku leave from Rauma busstation. Cheap bustickets can be bought online at onnibus.com

All artists should provide their own materials. You can bring your materials with you, buy them in the nearest towns or order them online.

Rauma has two small art supply stores: Rauman askarteluohjaus, Art & Design Salme Kauppi. Some art materials can also be bought at Suomalainen kirjakauppa, Prisma, Tokmanni and Puuilo. Bigger art supply stores are in Turku (1,5 hour drive) Tampere (2 hours drive) and Helsinki (3,5 hours drive).
It is also possible to order art supplies beforehand. If you let us know when your material will arrive, we can receive it for you, so you’ll be able to start working right at the beginning of your residency. Some examples of art supplies webstores:
