While collecting the artworks for this year’s summer exhibition, we noticed one major theme recurring in works of the artists-in-residence. Intuitively, each artist has worked with the topic of how we connect with our natural surroundings.

Even without intention, the works naturally connect with each other and to our relation to the environment, reflecting the urgency of this topic. The artists touch upon on our ability to perceive and interact with the nature that surrounds us, explored trough different mediums and methods.

Most of the works directly relate to the natural environment of Reila. Elements like moss, pines, seaweed and deer hair become the protagonists of the works. Though various senses, the artworks invite the viewer to interact with the elements of the landscape.

Contrasting with these peaceful scenes, some artists expose harsh realities of the effects of human actions on the environment, especially during wartime and in ecological crises. Other artists work dreamier, take inspiration from mythology, naivety and memory to create room for imagination and sensitivity.

Collectively, the various artworks show how the experience of observing nature can provide us with a space (not always available in urban life) to reflect on our current way of living and its effect on the environment.
